Marlowe & McNabb Lawyers Receive Board Certification

In Construction Law

TAMPA . . . . Stephen D. Marlowe and Brian F. Stayton of Marlowe & McNabb have been certified by the Florida Bar as specialists in construction law.

Certification is a voluntary program for lawyers, approved by the Florida Supreme Court and administered by The Florida Bar. The program helps the public choose lawyers who have demonstrated experience and expertise in a particular area of law.

Mr. Marlowe has been in practicing law for 32 years, most of which time was spent in construction law. However, since certification by the Florida Bar wasn’t offered for construction law until this year, he has not enjoyed the recognition of being "Board Certified."

"I was pleased that the Bar finally recognized that the specialty of construction law was worthy of certification. As soon as I became aware it was being offered, I signed up and began to prepare for the exam," said Marlowe. "With certification by the Florida Bar, both our current clients and potential clients will have the added confidence that their attorney is an expert in construction law ,"added Marlowe.

Brian Stayton, who has been practicing construction law for 16 years, felt the same way.

"As soon as this was offered, I knew it was something I had to do. I believe clients have a higher level of confidence in an attorney who is Board Certified in Construction Law by the Florida Bar," said Stayton.

Both attorneys are members of the first group of 109 Florida lawyers who have met the requirements for Board Certification in construction law.

"We couldn’t be more pleased that our law firm now has two certified lawyers," said Marlowe.

Certification is the highest level of recognition by The Florida Bar. Currently there are 20 areas of law approved for certification. Certified attorneys are the only lawyers allowed to identify or advertise themselves as "Florida Bar Board Certified" or as specialists in their fields.

Board certification is valid for five years, during which time an attorney must continue to practice law and attend a minimum number of Florida Bar-approved continuing legal education courses. To be re-certified, requirements similar to those for initial certification must be met.

Board-certified lawyers have a minimum of five years in law practice. They must show substantial involvement in the field of law for which certification is sought. They must receive a passing grade on the examination required of all applicants. Certified lawyers must also satisfy a peer review assessment of their competence in the specialty field, plus character, and demonstrate ethics and professionalism in the practice of law.

Certification can help a client or potential client by giving the person seeking a lawyer objective information regarding the lawyer’s qualifications. These lawyers exemplify the high standards the Florida Bar sets for all of its members.

Not all qualified lawyers are certified, but those who are board certified have taken the extra step to have their competence and experience recognized.
